Upcoming 2016 Interoperability Workshop

The SIF is considering a virtual Interoperability Workshop for 2016. Ideas for sessions and presentations follow. If you would like to contribute ideas for sessions and/or presentations, please e-mail the information indicated by the columns of the following table to Steve Browdy.

Meeting Location: WebEx (or join.me, Google hangout) ( The Webinar system is only for one way lecture not fully interactive. On the other hand, the Webex can be invited max 25 participants. )

Proposed Sessions and topics (all presentations should be no longer than 20 minutes):(speakers present broadly without specific GEO/GEOSS terminology; abstract to general interoperability issues and concerns, where possible.)

Session 1: Introduction 10 minutes	This session will contain an introduction by the SIF to the goals and logistics of the workshop, and introductions to the sessions and presentations of the workshop. Interoperability issues to be considered will be introduced.	1. Agenda, logistics, and workshop webpage. ( Steve Browdy) (10 minutes)	No Discussion. Questions answered. Invitees to workshop: DSWG, GEO Tasks, CoPs, ESIP, USGEO (Yana), OGC (Bart), NOAA (Jeff DLB), NASA (???), etc.
Session 2: GEOSS Overview   10 minutes	This session will give a high-level overview of the current GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) and overall design of GEOSS. There will also be a quick preview of the evolution to be addressed in Session 6.	1. GEOSS Architecture, components, and operations. ( Steve Browdy) (10 minutes)	Mention Best Practices and BPW. (Notify presenters about mentioning associated best practices and standards to their topic) (Capacity Building: Lucia) No Discussion. Questions Answered.
Session 3: Interoperability and Data Access Overview   40 minutes	This session will explore what is meant by interoperability for GEOSS and how it is impacts the GEOSS user experience in discovering, accessing, and using data. Focus will be on 3 of the GEOSS Data Management Principles: Metadata, Traceability, and Quality Control. What features does GEOSS need under the hood and at the user interface to deliver maximum value? What should be the role of standards? How can semantics help?   (these questions don't really help focus the topic as it relates to DMPs. And semantics is no longer a topic in the workshop.)	1. Interoperability overview (GCI benefit to GEOSS providers and users) (Speaker-Bart) (10 minutes)   2. Standards overview and how they relate to DMPs (SIR, BPW, talk about existing standards, including semantics and upcoming standards, broad overview, and best practices regarding interoperability) (Slides by Paul, Speaker SJSK or Bart) (10 minutes) 3. DMPs overview (what DMPs are, the focus of this workshop, the connection with interoperability and issues to be addressed) (Speaker SJSK) (10 minutes ) 4. Discussion. (10 minutes)	The session will focus on giving overviews of standards, interoperability, and DMPs. Discussion and questions.
Session 4: Data Management Principle 1 (Metadata)   40 minutes	This session will introduce the proposed GEOSS Data Management Principle 1 (Metadata). Survey results, relationship to interoperability, and how it might be implemented in GEOSS/GCI.	1. Metadata DMP discussion (SJSK) (20 minutes) 2. Discussion (20 minutes)	metadata is a huge topic. in context of DMPs the focus should be on metadata authoring - what standard to follow? what tools are available?
Session 5: Data Management Principle 5 (Traceability)   40 minutes	This session will introduce the proposed GEOSS Data Management Principle 5 (Traceability). Survey results, relationship to interoperability, and how it might be implemented in GEOSS/GCI.	1. Traceability DMP discussion (speaker Andreas Matteus ???) (20 minutes) 2. Discussion (20 minutes)	This is really about metadata, specifically provenance metadata. So, the topic is how to capture and present it (what standard to follow)
Session 6: Data Management Principle 6 (Quality Control)   40 minutes	This session will introduce the proposed GEOSS Data Management Principle 6 (Quality Control). Survey results, relationship to interoperability, and how it might be implemented in GEOSS/GCI.	1. Quality Control DMP discussion (Joan, other GeoViQua folks) (20 minutes) 2. Discussion (20 minutes)	As an example, GeoViQua and the GEO Label concept will be shown. GEOSS isn't going to tell providers how to do QA/QC, so this is also about metadata - how to present quality information in metadata.
Session 7: The Future of GEOSS and the GCI   60 minutes	This session will discuss the various ways that the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI) can be utilized, both interactively and programmatically, and evolved to realize added value through interoperability. Known issues will be introduced and discussed. The question, "What technical gaps exist that require evolution in order to realize desired exploitation of the GEOSS and GCI?" will be posed and discussed. ( Apply this to the 3 DMPs discussed by exploring how the GCI can support compliance with these DMPs )	1. Community Portal and Application GCI Use (Ken McDonald - quick overview, mention of examples) (10 minutes) 2. GEO API concept (speaker Steve) (10 minutes) 3. Introduction of ideas for evolution and their relation to DMPs (big data, clouds, citizen science, etc.) (Arne J\x{fffd}rgen Berre from SINTEF) (10 minutes) 4. Workshop wrap-up (SIF role and capacity building) (speaker Lucia or Steve) (5 minutes)  5. Discussion (25 minutes)	I have not asked Arne yet, but he has been involved in AIPs and is working on citizens observatories and Big data.

2014 GEOSS Interoperability Workshop

The 2014 workshop did not take place due to time constraints and scheduling issues. The SIF plans to have a 2016 workshop.

2013 - GEOSS Future Products Workshop

The SIF has held 2-day annual workshops many times since 2009, to explore themes of interest for its continuing and planned activities. The Fall 2012 workshop was deferred to March 2013, due to the confluence of topics and opportunity to contribute to the GEOSS Future Products Workshop, held at NOAA near Washington DC. The GEOSS AIP-6 kickoff was also conducted immediately after the workshop.
